Cariocas Board Member Dr. A. Michael
Spence Awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences
On October 10, 2001, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
announced that Dr. A. Michael Spence, Cariocas board member,
is the co-recipient of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.
Dr. Spence was recognized for his seminal contributions to
the understanding of the critical role asymmetric information
plays in the economy.
"Cariocas is deeply honored to have Dr. Spence on its board,"
said Laurent Massa, President and CEO. "He has provided invaluable
guidance on the theoretical ideas, their embodiment in products,
and their deployment in the large brand company environment."
Yoav Shoham, Chairman and co-founder of Cariocas added, "Mike
was an early believer in Cariocas, when it was just an idea
on a whiteboard. As a pioneer in information economics he
got the ideas right away, and could see how they can be made
relevant to the sales and marketing environment. From day
one, it was an honor and a pleasure to have Mike on board,
and the Nobel Prize hasn't changed that."
Dr. Spence commented on his role at Cariocas by saying, "It
is not every day that a company is created to leverage deep
ideas from within economics and game theory, and to create
a new category of solutions based on them. I've had a lot
of fun working with the team, and look forward to more of
the same." Dr. Spence will be honored at a special ceremony
in Stockholm on December 10.
